Description

Music : Alternative : Lossless
Unlike other such offerings, this one forsakes editing in favor of restoring the band’s original release order. No doubt such an approach is shocking given earlier releases, especially since the material seemingly desperately calls out for some sort of single disc version. Nevertheless, none will be forthcoming. Amazingly enough, the Pumpkins already did a revamped version with their original vinyl release, which spread across three LPs and featured a vastly different track order. While ostensibly to arrange “similar” tracks, it is actually just a random hodgepodge which accomplishes nothing (is Bodies really similar to To Forgive and Porcelina? And why does Take Me Down appear on side one?). The 2012 remaster did return to the original order, but on four LPs with several 12-minute sides. Chopping up the album even more does not count as an improvement.

Clearly the original LP order was designed to better spread out Mellon Collie’s best songs. While nobody will say so, those first six tracks are stronger and more focused than the rest of the album, and there is a noticeable dip in quality afterward (granted not including 1979, the sole track that everyone agrees is good). Three of the album’s first four singles are here, and it’s hard not to wish the rest had somehow kept this momentum. Siamese Dream never dropped in quality, and Mellon Collie would have been an all-time great had it accomplished something similar. It was not to be unfortunately, which means its merits are now constantly debated.

However, the subsequent quality does not suffer all that much. The other 22 tracks are still very good, as they explore a wide variety of styles which is atypical of any other Pumpkins release. It is a surprising consistency which the band has struggled with ever since, and that makes Mellon Collie one of the strongest CD-era double albums. Putting out over two hours of original music in recognizable song form does not happen very often.

Because of its length, it was inevitable that Mellon Collie would receive mixed reviews from fans depending on their attention spans. And equally inevitably, they trotted out every double album cliché in lieu of a real review. Would be better as a single album? Check. Should have released the albums separately? Check. Indulgent? Pretentious? Second disc is worse? You’d better believe they’re all there. But while everyone is certain that a one disc version of Mellon Collie would be “perfect”, what stands out is how not one reviewer can agree on which songs are the good ones. Some hate the lighter ballads, others some of the hard rockers, but none of them are consistent. Some deride the second disc while others like it better. Everybody is certain their version is right but nobody agrees on what that is. Outside of 1979, you can probably find someone who hates literally every other track.

Even if most of them aren’t great, not one song is bad enough to be worth getting rid of. And arbitrarily paring them down would hurt the feel and ostensible concept. While a direct narrative can’t be ascertained and probably never existed, it’s clearly about a group of people who are looking forward (or not so much) to their romantic encounters later that night and eventually have a rewarding experience. There isn’t necessarily any linearity here, and the pretension about these songs representing specific times of day is best forgotten. Nevertheless, making it to and finishing those final tracks creates a small sense of accomplishment which can’t be replicated by half the journey or only cherry-picking your favorite songs.

What’s amazing though is how clearly some parts of this album are tailor-made for the LP format and yet have not been put together that way on an official release. The final five songs are obviously the “night” portion referred to in Tonight, Tonight and Thru The Eyes Of Ruby, while those first six strong songs wrap up a little under 21 minutes in. The rest of the album can be divided into similar-length sections which consist of no less or more than four or five songs. This only doesn’t quite work for the first CD since it is slightly shorter than the second, so the LP-only track Infinite Sadness was appended to the first LP as a sort-of intermission between discs. Frankly, these solutions are so obvious that one wonders why this wasn’t the original plan (LP mastering wasn’t the reason. All six sides are less than 22 minutes long, while the original vinyl features several longer than 24).

I’m not going to argue that the Pumpkins came up with the perfect order themselves. Placing most of the best songs early seems like a commercial ploy to combat attention-span deficient teens, and haphazardly placing the heavier tracks may not have been best (in this format, Where Boys Fear To Tread and Bodies share an album side with the idyllic trio of Thirty-Three, In The Arms Of Sleep, and 1979). Admittedly, I am most likely just used to this order after many years of listening to it, and find imagining a different one difficult even with its flaws. Basically, I don’t see anything gained by changing the order or cutting out songs. The first six and final five work together and feel like album sides, while the others can mostly fall where they do. This at least gives listeners an opportunity to listen to the vinyl version in its familiar order which still holds the same continuity as the CDs (Take Me Down ends side three here at the LP’s “halfway” point). You could put these tracks into your own preferred order, and perhaps a better one can be found. For once though, I choose to accept Mellon Collie’s flaws because the overall experience is still rewarding and I’m not convinced any other order is better. Compared to the two Machinas or most of the Pumpkins’ work after this, these 28 songs all deserve to be released. And at least we can now imagine a proper version on vinyl since one will probably not exist.
